Faculty-Led Health Sciences Tour: Greece

This 14-day faculty-led program explores Ikaria – one of the world’s five Blue Zones – through the lens of health sciences. Students will engage with local healthcare professionals, study regional diets, explore the role of community in aging, and meet centenarians who offer firsthand insights into long, healthy living.

Combining cultural immersion with academic depth, this tour is ideal for faculty in public health, nutrition, medicine, gerontology, physical therapy, and global health.

Day 1 – Arrival in Athens

Arrive in Greece and check into hotel near the airport. Afternoon free to explore Athens and visit the Acropolis and Parthenon. Welcome dinner at a traditional taverna.

Day 3 – Wine, Tradition & Longevity

Meet and interview local centenarians. Visit the Folklore Museum in Vrakades. Afternoon vineyard exploration and discussion on fermented foods, moderation, and the social aspects of diet.

Day 5 – Mediterranean Diet & Community Celebration

Participate in a hands-on Greek cooking class focused on the Mediterranean diet. In the evening, attend a traditional Panigiri festival – music, dance, food, and intergenerational bonding.

Day 7 – Ranchos Christos Village Visit

Interview a centenarian in this remote community known for its high longevity. Explore themes of social structure, simplicity, and purpose.

Day 9 – Healthcare Systems & Longevity Insights

Guided visit to Agios Kirikos Hospital with a presentation from a local cardiologist. Discuss aging, preventative care, and regional health trends.

Day 11 – Faros Village & Final Interviews

Travel to Faros for lunch and a final centenarian interview. Reflect on key patterns of health, resilience, and daily rhythm in Blue Zone living.

Day 13 – Reflection & Relaxation

Free day to revisit favorite places, swim, journal, or enjoy one final Ikarian meal.

Day 2 – Travel to Ikaria

Domestic flight to Ikaria, followed by transfer to the coastal village of Armenistis. Settle into accommodations and enjoy a sunset dinner in Nas.

Day 4 – Trekking & Farm-to-Table Living

Guided hike through Chalaris Gorge to explore physical activity and natural environments. Visit Thea’s organic farm for a local meal and discussion on sustainable agriculture.

Day 6 – Wellness & Spirituality

Visit a local honey producer and explore the antioxidant properties of Ikarian honey. Afternoon visit to Theoktisti Monastery for reflection and cultural context.

Day 8 – Southern Ikaria & Coastal Exploration

Travel south to Therma via Seychelles Beach. Enjoy swimming, hiking, or snorkeling. Check in at new accommodations near the island’s natural hot springs.

Day 10 – Free Day In Therma

Explore the hot springs, beaches, or hike the coastal trail. Optional boat tour to hidden beaches. Open time for faculty-led discussion or journaling.

Day 12 – Physiotherapy & Local Voices

Shadow a physiotherapist at the local hospital. Meet a community elder for a discussion on family dynamics, caregiving, and quality of life in old age.

Day 14 – Departure

Transfer to Ikaria Airport and flight back to Athens for onward travel to the U.S.
