South Africa: An Exploration of Environmental Science, Ecology, Engineering, and Sustainability

This faculty-led tour highlights the intersection of science, sustainability, and community in South Africa. The program is centered in Cape Town – one of the continent’s leading cities for environmental innovation – paired with an immersive wildlife conservation experience in a private reserve near Kruger National Park.

Designed for faculty in environmental science, ecology, engineering, and sustainability studies, this program introduces students to real-world applications of STEM learning through field visits, guided exploration, and community interaction..

Day 1 – Arrival in Cape Town

Arrival at Cape Town International Airport and transfer to hotel. Optional visit to Table Mountain, weather permitting.

Day 3 – Cape Peninsula Field Study

Full-day exploration of the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and Boulders Beach. Focus on biodiversity, coastal ecosystems, and conservation.

Day 5 – Babylonstoren

Spend the day at Babylonstoren, one of South Africa’s leading examples of regenerative agriculture, water management, and landscape design.

Day 7 – Travel to Safari Reserve

Fly to Hoedspruit and transfer to a private game lodge. Evening safari with ecological focus and conservation commentary.

Day 9 – Final Safari and Return Travel

Morning safari followed by check-out. Optional overnight in Cape Town or direct transfer for departure. Alternatively, continue the tour to Victoria falls, Zimbabwe.

Day 2 – City Orientation & Sustainability Walk

Guided city tour focused on urban planning, infrastructure, and resilience. Includes Bo-Kaap, the V&A Waterfront, and local innovation hubs.

Day 4 – Kirstenbosch & Township Visit

Morning visit to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens to study plant biodiversity and bee hives. Afternoon tour in a local township, covering topics such as water access and housing design.

Day 6 – Flex Day or Cultural Exploration

Optional group excursion (e.g., Robben Island, Zeitz MOCAA), or open afternoon for cultural engagement.

Day 8 – Wildlife Conservation & Ecology

Morning and evening game drives. In-between sessions include animal tracking, species protection strategies, and talk with a field ranger.

Day 10 – Departure

Transfer to Cape Town International Airport for international flights.
